Quick Answers for New Players

Last updated May 16, 2026

This page covers the questions players ask most often about the site, gameplay, controls, game modes, technical issues, scores, and privacy. If you need a step-by-step fix for a specific technical problem, the Troubleshooting page goes into more depth.

Is this the official Pac-Man game?

No. This is an unofficial, open-source browser adaptation of classic Pac-Man-style maze gameplay. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., the holder of the PAC-MAN trademark. The project is maintained for educational purposes under the GPL v3 open-source license. For official Pac-Man products, licensed games, and brand information, use official Bandai Namco channels. The aim of this project is to make classic maze gameplay accessible in the browser and to provide practical learning guides alongside it.

Is this game free to play?

Yes. The browser version is completely free to access and play. You do not need to create an account, provide payment information, or sign up for anything. Simply open the game page and start playing immediately. There is no trial period and no features locked behind payment.

Do I need to download anything?

No download is required. The game runs entirely in your browser using standard web technologies. You can open the game on any modern browser — desktop or mobile — and start playing without installing an application, plugin, or browser extension. If the page is taking a long time to load on your first visit, it may be caching assets; a second load should be faster.

Can I play on mobile devices?

Yes, on supported mobile browsers. Touch and swipe controls are available for mobile play. That said, a desktop or laptop with a physical keyboard generally gives a better experience because arrow keys are more precise than swipe gestures when navigating tight maze corridors at speed. If you are playing on mobile and controls feel unresponsive, ensure your browser is up to date and try landscape orientation for more screen space.

What controls should I use?

On desktop, the primary controls are the arrow keys for movement and Esc to open the in-game menu. In Practice Mode, additional controls unlock: Shift to rewind, 1 and 2 to slow the game down, O to toggle Turbo Mode, and I to toggle invincibility. On mobile, swipe in the direction you want to move. The complete control reference is in the How to Play guide.

What is the goal of Pac-Man?

Your goal is to clear every dot in the maze without being caught by any of the four ghosts — Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde. Power pellets temporarily turn the ghosts blue and frightened, allowing you to eat them for escalating bonus points. Clearing all dots and pellets completes the stage and advances the game to the next board with faster ghosts. For a detailed explanation of how each ghost targets and when they change behavior, visit the Ghost Behavior Guide.

How do I score more points?

Points come from four sources: regular dots (10 each), power pellets (50 each), frightened ghosts (200 to 1,600 in a doubling chain), and fruit bonuses (100 to 5,000 depending on the stage). Consistent high scores come from smart power pellet use that chains multiple ghost kills per pellet, efficient board routing that avoids dangerous late-stage cleanup, and collecting fruit without overextending. For exact values, a ghost chain diagram, and beginner score milestones, see the Scoring Guide.

Where can I learn about scoring, ghost behavior, and game terminology?

Several guides on this site cover these topics in depth. The Ghost Behavior Guide explains how Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde each choose their targets in chase, scatter, and frightened modes. The Scoring Guide covers point values, ghost chains, fruit timing, and a risk-versus-reward framework. The Glossary defines 35+ terms — including scatter mode, turn buffering, and ghost chain — in plain English. The How to Play guide is the best starting point if you are new to the game.

Why are there different game modes?

The normal game runs at authentic arcade pace and is the core experience. The additional modes exist to accelerate learning in ways the original arcade never provided. Learn Mode lets you see ghost targeting in real time so you can understand why specific positions are dangerous. Practice Mode lets you slow down, rewind mistakes, and test route decisions without penalty. Together they compress what would otherwise take many hours of trial and error into deliberate, focused practice sessions. Full descriptions are on the Game Modes page.

What are Learn Mode and Practice Mode?

Learn Mode displays additional visual information about ghost intentions during play, making it easier to study targeting and phase transitions without reacting under full pressure. Practice Mode adds a rewind key (Shift), game slow-down keys (1 and 2), a Turbo toggle (O), and an invincibility toggle (I). The rewind feature is particularly useful: when you die, you can rewind to just before the mistake, slow the game down, and try a different choice — rather than starting the whole round over. For full descriptions of all modes, see the Game Modes page. If you encounter unfamiliar terms while reading about modes, the Glossary covers all major Pac-Man terminology in plain language.

What is Turbo Mode?

Turbo Mode increases movement speed significantly above normal arcade pace, making the game feel more demanding and reactive. It is toggled with the O key while in Practice Mode. Turbo Mode is better suited to players who are already comfortable with normal arcade speed and want an extra challenge. If you activate it accidentally and the game feels out of control, press O again to turn it off. Beginners should start with the standard game pace rather than Turbo Mode.

Which mode should beginners start with?

Start with the normal game to get a feel for controls, ghost pressure, and basic routing at standard speed. Once you can survive the first stage but want to understand why you keep dying in specific situations, switch to Learn Mode to see ghost intentions, or Practice Mode to rewind and study problem moments. Practice Mode's rewind feature is especially helpful early on. The How to Play guide has a practical framework for getting started and drills for improving specific skills.

Why is the game not loading?

Common causes include a slow network connection, an aggressive browser extension blocking scripts, an outdated browser, or a corrupted browser cache. Start by refreshing the page, then try disabling browser extensions one at a time, switching to a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Edge), and clearing the browser cache. Testing on a different network can rule out connection issues. The Troubleshooting page has a step-by-step loading fix guide covering each of these scenarios in detail.

What should I try if keyboard controls do not work?

The most common cause is lost input focus: the game window is not currently selected and is therefore not receiving keyboard events. Click directly on the game area first, then try the arrow keys again. If controls still do not respond, check whether you are in a mode with different key mappings, perform a full page refresh, and try disabling browser extensions that might intercept keyboard input. The Troubleshooting page covers this and other control issues with step-by-step instructions.

Why is there no sound?

Most modern browsers require a deliberate user interaction — such as a click or key press — before allowing any audio to play. If the game loaded without you clicking first, the initial audio may have been blocked automatically. Click on the game area or press any key, then start a new round. Also verify that your device volume is on, that the browser tab is not muted, and that the browser has not silenced the site's audio at the browser level. A full page refresh after the initial interaction can also resolve persistent audio issues.

How do scores save?

Scores are stored locally in your browser using a standard feature called localStorage. They persist between sessions on the same browser and device without requiring an account or login. Scores are not saved to any server, so they do not carry over to other devices or browsers. Scores will be cleared if you use a private or incognito browsing window, explicitly clear your browser data, or use a different browser or device. There is no server-side account system — all data stays on your device.

Does the site use cookies or analytics?

This site uses Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly service that does not set advertising cookies, does not track individual users across websites, and does not build behavioral profiles. It collects only aggregate traffic data such as page views and referrers. The site is not currently serving Google AdSense ads. How can I contact the project?

Visit the Contact page to report a bug, ask a privacy question, suggest a feature, or raise a rights-related concern. For technical problems, include your browser name and version, your operating system, and a description of the issue — it helps narrow down the cause faster. For common questions that are already answered, the Troubleshooting page is usually the fastest path to a solution.
